"Flying over the Rockies"
20" x 34" Acrylic
I
caught this through the plane window while flying home to California
right ahead of a hurricane heading up the east coast... The clouds only
opened for about 5 Seconds and I had just been filming and hoping for a
shot... One
of my favorite ways to get subject matter is with my DVD camera because
it is almost like being there live...

"New Emerging Artist"
"Riki Colby"
I am 54 years old, and worked all of my life until I became ill.
After I became ill I found that my brain did not work as it once had
and I decided to attend the new Junior College in my area, to keep my
brain muscle working. I have an AA in Business Management, Computer
Applications, General Ed, and I am two classes short of an AA in Art.
I was given the "Student of the Year Award" for tutoring for disabled
serves; I tutored students on the adaptive computer programs.
In 1988 I was bitten by a Lyme disease infected tick. Our local doctor
did not know about Lyme other than they had it back east. I was diagnosed
in 1997 after I had started school to make my brain function. I had
started getting lost when I went places and I needed help getting up. I am
still under a Dr.’s care.
This disease affects my joints, and muscles, my balance, and my
cognitive function. I have Fibromyalgia as a result of "Lyme
Disease".
I have a lot of fatigue. Painting, I have found helps immensely
with the brain fog. "I believe if I paint enough, I will get well".
My goal is to keep painting and sell some of my work as prints, cards, and some originals. Another goal is to be able to have a studio
with room to work on large canvases. I paint now in my living room and I
use most of the walking space and I have to put it away when I am done
each time.
I paint with watercolor and Acrylic, oil bothers my breathing, or I
would use that too. I stretch half and full sheets of watercolor paper and
I also stretch my own canvases, most of the time. I have purchased two
large canvases that I don’t have room to work on in my living room.
I can not stand back and look at a big canvas there.
I painted my first painting in the spring of 2003,
My work has hung at Sierra College student art show at the Nevada City
campus, also at the North Columbia Cultural center
I have been invited to join the Pioneer Art Guild here locally.
The time it takes to create each piece depends on the subject size and
my health, Last semester I did 12 water colors in 16 weeks, two were full
sheets, and this semester I will do seven acrylic paintings. I will take a
break for a while after that. This amount of work is a lot for me to do
constantly so reproductions will be available for the most popular pieces.
